The Lunar Lesson

Today marks the halfway point of my trip. I have 30 more days here. I spent today weeding a pineapple patch. Then, after lunch, Adrian and I went to the Earth Rose farm to see Sol and Ella. Things seem okay there and Sol's kids are visiting. They seem to be keeping the drama. Carlos, the farm worker, was "watching Ella get dressed" so she onfronted him and he may cease working at the Earth Rose Farm.

But enough about the silliness of the Earth Rose. I have recently learned some cool stuff about farming and lunar cycles. They plant and chop down trees when the moon is waning here. More specifically in the fourth quarter. There is more to this than mere superstition. Sap and other chemicals in the tree act differently during the different lunar cycles just as the tides of the ocean do. When the moon is waning the sap and some other chemicals rise up and can make the wood harder and less susceptible to termites. I may have the details a little confused but that is what they say. Also, Guillermo mentioned that the fourth quarter is also the best time to castrate an animal because that is when they bleed least.

In other news, Adrian, Miranda (another WWOOFer of Earth Rose) and I are going to hike Cerre Chirripo on Thursday. It is the highest point of Costa Rica and you can see the sunrise and sunset on the Atlantic and Pacific from the top. Should be fun.
